Design options help in providing numerous alternatives of a single design for a particular building or house type. These alternatives can suggest better options of a single design in terms of design change, color change, direction etc. and can be managed using different design options. When we work with AutoCAD, we will have to draft four different options, while in Revit we can create multiple options through a single option.  Design options gives a great opportunity to Architects to present their creativity and design experience.

As we all know Revit, has pioneered Building Information Modelling. It introduced this method of providing design options. This option is available in the Revit ribbon tool and further leads you into design option panel. One can provide design options by changing the overall design or some portions of the building resolving the concerns that can be potentially disapproved by the client.  Using design options in Revit is a simpler task of providing small scope design options because very few portions of project are to be edited. But for large scope of designing it becomes a bit complex as most of the parts of project are to be edited accordingly.

Steps – Working with Revit Design Options:

We can easily go to design option from manage tool from left top corner by clicking “Design Options”.

By clicking design options menu, you can see the design options panel window on a screen. This design panel window consists of three options on the right side which are – “Edit”, “Option Set” and “Option”.

Edit: This function is only used after creating various design options. Edit is mainly used for editing of created design options. Thus it is of no use while providing design options for the first time.

Option Set: It enables us to define the portion where to actually provide design options. It means we can select different parts of the project where we have to provide different design options for example Entrance, lobby, kitchen area, roof etc. All these parts are to be managed by using the function “Option Set”. We can go to “New” in option set for adding or providing design options for the first time.

Option: This function actually means the sub design option for a single above “Option Set” there may be various options named as design option1, design option2 accordingly. Consider an example in which let entrance be option set having two different sub design options for arch shaped entrance and spiral type entrance which can be included in “option tool”. Thus option set and option in design option manager can be compared with child parent relationship.

After completion of providing design option one should move on to the main model in revit. All the parts of project except where design options are provided remain fixed or constant in main model. Fewer parts of project will change accordingly as we vary design options in it.

Finally we can edit the created design options by going into edit tool in design options manager panel window.
