What are Architectural Construction Drawings?

Architectural Construction Drawings refer to the technical drawings that are used for building construction purpose by the contractors. These orthographic projections form the very basis of any residential or commercial construction process.

Architectural Construction Documentation lays emphasis on dimensions, slopes and angles. These are the 2D representation drawings providing the complete detailing of the proposed building. Architectural Construction Drawing can be utilized for; statutory approvals, to provide instructions on site, for the procurement of materials with the help of BOM and so on.

BIM for Architectural Construction Drawings:

It is possible to directly draw Architectural Construction Drawings in 2D. However, nowadays the common practice is to use a Building Information Model, or its software like Revit to make a 3D model and extract these 2d drawings in the form of .dwg or pdf files. Revit BIM Services can be used to prepare a 3D model according to the LOD requirement, its accuracy can be checked and ensured that there are no clashes before 2D construction drawings are extracted from it.

So why is it important in any project to get good quality and precise Architectural Construction Documentation? Below we list out the major reasons for it:

1. Updated Site Plans for Survey Purposes

Any architectural project begins by exploration of the location of construction site. For this the architects use a general view which is known as a site plan. Revit helps in increasing the quality and accuracy of these plans. For example, quadcopter photographs of locations can be used as the base for digital architectural drawings, which helps the architects provide a better and easier representation of the site.

2. It increases accuracy in the construction process:

One of the biggest advantage of an accurate architectural construction documentation is precise dimensions and measurements on which the construction can take place. These 2D drawings not just help in knowing what needs to be built but also provides complete space distribution i.e. where all the elements will go in the building. It also delivers information about the co-relation between different levels of the building and about where pre-fabricated components should be installed. Another gain of extracting the 2D drawings from a 3D models is that all the parameters are calculated using programed formulas and thus are 100% accurate. It also makes it possible to transfer from one measurement system to another if necessary.

Additionally, Revit have the function of clash detection which in the pre-planning stage detects any clash in the 3D model. Once all the clashes are resolved only then are the 2D drawings extracted. An inaccurate construction drawing can lead to potential conflicts which would in turn result in unnecessary waste of time, money and labour.

3. It is easy to modify:

When any change is done in the Revit 3D model all the interconnected elements are automatically changed. Without Revit these modifications would be extremely time consuming. Here, the architect or the designer will have to manually make changes in all the architectural construction drawings as well as well its interconnected aspects.  For example: a client might request the change in the location of the door which means changes need to be done in the floor plan, interior/exterior sections, elevations as well as on other interfering pre-coordinated elements like another door/window.

4. Improves Visualization and Presentation:

Architectural Construction Drawings extracted from the 3D model provide better visualization. They allow to cut the sections and lines as per the requirement, provides clear prospective views and also enhances the understanding of the floor plans.

A 2D rendered plan with Photoshop can also be used to convey the architect’s design to the non-professionals who simply do not have the technical expertise to interpret these drawings. A 2D rendered plan also elevates the presentation and shows what the final result would look like. However, high-quality the digital drafts might be they cannot be more appealing than a rendered image. This helps in client or investor presentations.

Conclusion

Thus, Revit Construction Drawings are reliable assets to speed up the project development process and improves the quality of the result at the same time. This is perhaps one of the main reasons why a lot of leading architects are using advanced 3D technologies in their projects.
